CHARACTER
Marty is a zebra with dreams of exploring beyond the confines of the Central Park Zoo and into the wild. Marty possesses a sweet disposition and is Alex’s best friend.

REQUIREMENTS
Strong Comedy Actor
General American accent required
Lower Baritone (Bb below mid C to high G)
Must be comfortable in lower register
Pop / Musical Theatre voice (with ability to rap a bonus)
Good mover and confident physicality is vital
Playing Age 22 – 34

CHARACTER
Alex, the lion, is the main attraction at the Central Park Zoo and undoubtedly “The King of New York City”. Oozing with charm and a magnetic quality of a showman. He’s a fun-loving fella whose devotion to steak is matched only by his devotion to his friends.

REQUIREMENTS
Confident Actor
General American accent required
High Tenor (B below mid C to a top C. Need to be comfortable top A.) Soulful voice.
Good mover and confident physicality is vital.

CHARACTER
Melman is a kind-hearted giraffe who is a bit hypochondriac. He’s always just a little bit nervous, but when it comes down to it, he’ll rise to the situation.

Baritone (D to a G#).
Characterful
Confidence in physicality is vital
Playing age 24 – 38
Height 5’11” – 6’5″

CHARACTER
Gloria is a bold, sassy and larger than life hippopotamus. Gloria also possesses a maternal streak that shines when she’s with her three closest friends: Alex, Marty and Melman.

High Belt (to a top E). Big, rounded tone.
Confident Mover

Two contrasting soulful, diva-ish Pop / Contemporary Musical Theatre songs (32 Bars each)

CHARACTER
King Julien – the King of the Lemurs and the most flamboyant of all. He likes to move it, move it! An audience favourite – he is delusional about his stature, his status and ‘fans’. Accent should be lead by film.
Zeke – a zoo-keeper who serves as an on-stage guide for the audience. Must grab the audience with palpable energy and enthusiasm.

REQUIREMENTS
This is a HIGHLY PHYSICAL track that requires puppetry skills, stamina and a strong comedy.
High Tenor (A to top B). Surprisingly soulful.

CHARACTER
Skipper – A penguin with a severe case of the Napoleonic short-man syndrome. He holds delusions of grandeur, as the ‘mastermind’ leader of his penguin clan. Like Marty, he too is driven by a sense of ‘home’. Treats his escape like a military operation, serious and to the point.
Maurice – King Julien’s advisor. Somewhat jaded by working for his diva-King. More clued-up than the other lemurs.

REQUIREMENTS
This part requires strong comic timing, and will involve puppetry
General American accent
Accent should be lead by the film
Strong Baritone or Tenor
May be required to understudy

CHARACTER
Zelda – a zoo-keeper who serves as an on-stage guide for the audience. Must grab the audience with palpable energy and enthusiasm.
Mason – despite being a chimpanzee, Mason is your stereo-typical English gent. By no means ‘animalistic’ but sophisticated, cultured, stiff-upper lip. RP British accent required.

CHARACTER
Kowalski is a penguin under the lead of Skipper. Right-hand man to Skipper’s schemes.

REQUIREMENTS
Requires a versatile comic actor ready to leap into many parts
Experience in puppetry is a bonus
Strong high belt. Ensemble/close harmony work is also required
This part requires strong comic timing, and will involve puppetry

Private – the silliest of the penguins
Mort – a tiny lemur with serious cute-factor. Regularly dismissed/patronised by King Julien

Rico – a martial arts master in penguin-form
Candy – your over the top, all-American reporter. Super confident, cheesy, peppy. The part requires a performer confident with audience participation.

REQUIREMENTS
Alto with strong belt. Ensemble with close harmony work required.

An additional Ensemble member (male or female) and Male offstage swing will be cast from auditions.

AUDITION PROCESS

The first round of auditions for all roles will be done by video submission via the audition form below. Video submissions close 11:59pm on the 10th of March.

Please be prepared to submit the following:
1) Performance Resume
2) Headshot
3) Required Audition Material

If successful in the first round of video submission auditions you may be invited to attend a callback.

Callbacks will be held in:
Auckland – 21st and 22nd of March (venue to be confirmed closer to the time)
Wellington – 28th of March (venue to be confirmed closer to the time)

It is the individuals responsibility to attend these callbacks as well as any cost of travel and/or accommodation.

Further material from the show may be requested to be learnt by the creative team for the callbacks.

MADAGASCAR is a fully professional production and the roles will be paid in line with industry standards.

Successful candidates must be available exclusively from the 7th of June 2021 to 23 August 2021 and for potential additional weeks in October 2021.
